Your Executive Presence Starts Before You Speak

One of the most interesting conversations I’ve had recently on the Brandinc PR Podcast was with international keynote speaker and communications strategist Jasmine Romaine. We talked about executive presence, confidence, and the subtle communication signals that shape how people perceive us professionally.

One point she made immediately stuck with me:

“Your smile is your first impression.”

At first glance, it sounds simple. But the deeper we got into the conversation, the more I realized how often communications professionals focus heavily on messaging while overlooking presence.

As PR professionals, we understand perception better than most industries. We coach clients on messaging, media training, storytelling, and personal branding every day. But executive presence is often the layer underneath all of that. It’s the energy people experience before the elevator pitch even begins.

Jasmine shared how confidence is communicated long before someone says a word. Posture. Eye contact. Tone. Warmth. Approachability. Even something as seemingly small as a smile can influence whether someone perceives you as confident, trustworthy, or prepared.

And honestly? That conversation felt especially relevant in today’s environment where so much of our networking, media visibility, and leadership positioning happens both on-camera and in-person.

One thing I appreciated most was that this wasn’t about encouraging people to become performative or inauthentic. It was about intentional communication and understanding that executive presence is a strategic asset, not just a personality trait.

For communications professionals navigating leadership roles, client relationships, media opportunities, or public-facing work, it’s a reminder that how we show up matters just as much as what we say.

Because sometimes the difference between being overlooked and being remembered has less to do with talent and more to do with presence.
