5 Wellness Tips for New Mothers

No one in a family gives more than mothers. They are the nurturers who the family relies on for advice, comfort, and so much more. But oftentimes mothers, especially new mothers, don’t take time for themselves. Here are five wellness tips for new moms to help them recharge, de-stress, and simply have fun. We spoke with Brittney Lueck of DaoCloud, who is a new mom herself, about her top five top wellness tips that she recommends to other new parents.

Mothers, traditionally the most dedicated, nurturing, and hardest-working members of our family, tend to give more than they take. Especially new mothers who are experiencing the joys — and hardships — for the first time. Working mothers have it even more difficult, juggling the responsibilities of parenthood with duties that fund most things their children may take for granted.

Amid the work and play, mothers may forget to take time out for themselves. Here are five ways they can reverse that and pay attention to their own wellness, and recharge.

  1.     Plan something on the calendar for yourself. Too often new mothers are wrapped up in everything they need to do for their children, their family, and everyone else who comes through their doors. After a while, this can become routine, and routine often means forgetting to do something for you. Putting something on the calendar that takes place six months, three months, or even a month in advance will build anticipation, which is the key to happiness. Get excited about a spa day, a weekend visit to spend time with an old friend, or even a one-day road trip just by yourself.

  1.     Figure out what relaxes you. Relaxation may seem like a foreign concept, but it doesn’t have to be. Reconnect with something simple that gives you a pause in the day for you. It could be a short job, a meditation session, 30 minutes with a new book, yoga, or a walk with your spouse before or after dinner. Or maybe it’s just a five-minute break to breathe. Whatever it is, work it into your routine so it becomes part of your daily rhythm, and it moves you toward a more stress-free life.

  1.     Break your routine. Routines can be broken in very simple ways. Always taking the same way to the grocery store? Find a new route. Is there a park in the area you’ve never explored? Pull over and walk one of its trails. Always listening to the same music? Switch to a new station? New scenery, sounds, and flavors are good ways to lead you to think differently and to experience new levels of awareness. Mixing up the little things are small steps to making big steps easier.

  1.     Make errands fun. Oftentimes new mothers aren’t used to being so alone with their new child. The loneliness can compound when they go out to shop or work out and, once again, don’t have another adult to talk with. Find a friend nearby you can do these activities with. Someone you can go to the gym with, share a trip to the grocery store with, or simply take a walk with. It’s always more fun to break up your day with one of your peers. Plus, it’ll make those chores feel less like work and more like catch-up time with someone you like.

  1.     Challenge yourself. It’s never too late to learn. Yet new mothers get so caught up in their routine that they may think that their new life has no room for new achievements. That’s not true. As you lean more on others, like a spouse, friends, or family, use that extra time to push yourself to achieve goals you always imagined but haven’t yet achieved: Getting that degree, running that marathon, learning that skill, or taking that class.
