Inside the Industry

Welcome to Inside the Industry, a new member feature series from the PRSA Entertainment & Sports Section highlighting the professionals, perspectives and personalities that make up our community. Whether you work directly in sports and entertainment communications or simply share an interest in the community, this series aims to strengthen relationships, expand professional networks and celebrate the people behind the stories, events, brands and experiences that bring audiences together.

This week, we're highlighting @Kelsey Nicole Nelson, Social Media Chair on the PRSA Entertainment & Sports Section Executive Committee.

What’s something people outside the industry would be surprised to learn about your role?
I think people are still learning how vital being present at networking events is to my role as the owner of a full -service communications consulting firm, KryptiaNN. It’s not being a socialite, it’s being socially present. Building and maintaining strong relationships in and out of the industry is key. The exciting part about the entertainment and sports industry is that it touches everything, from culture to politics, which means there’s no room to nig or small to leverage intentionally.

If you could work any major event, tour, championship, premiere, or media moment in history, what would it be?
I've had the privilege and opportunity to have covered some of the most premiere sporting events including the FIFA Club World Cup, Super Bowl, NCAA championship games, NBA and NBA Finals, NASCAR, golf and tennis tournaments including the Citi Open and the Quicken Loans National golf tournament with Tiger Woods. But one event I have yet to cover is the Indy 500. After having worked in the motorsports industry, and knowing the history of the 110-year Indianapolis 500, it would be amazing to be part of the magical memories this top racing event creates for fans and drivers alike.

What’s one trend in sports or entertainment communications you’re most excited about right now?
By far vertical video is a trend in sports and entertainment I am excited about as someone who describes herself in two words: a storyteller and connector. In a world where everyone can have a microphone, vertical video has stood out amongst all the new trends we are seeing in digital storytelling. Whether you are creating content for social media reels, live streaming or vlogging, this short-form style of entertainment has everyone’s attention meeting them where they are. I think it will only continue to grow as people crave authentic quick-hitting storytelling.

What’s your go-to way to recharge after a big event or hectic work week?
After a hectic week, which has been my norm working in this industry, I love a good recharge that usually involves exploring a new restaurant in the area as a foodie. Always, love exploring the new restaurant scene.

What’s one fun fact most people in the section probably don’t know about you?
My family is related to Muddy Waters, so music has long played a role in my family's history and upbringing. Blues music has always moved me.

What are you currently watching, listening to, or following obsessively outside of work?
When not following sports and news, I love Netflix docuseries but the Netflix show that has had my attention lately is Nemesis! I love a good crime packed action series. And when not watching Nemesis, you can catch me listening to the latest from Ella Mai and trying to figure out my summer concert list which will hopefully include The R&B Tour with Chris Brown and Usher. I'm a 90s and 2000s R&B girl through and through.
