Are you a solopreneur, CEO or strategy consultant?

Do you follow Merriam-Webster on social media? If not, you’re missing out.  Not only do they give us insight into trends, they track popular word searches, authenticate new words that make it into the lexicon, and pick “words of the year.” PR practitioners know better than most that words matter.

So it makes sense that how you describe yourself and your work also matters.

A solopreneur is a person who sets up and runs a business – solo. Example: ‘being a solopreneur has forced me to learn how to handle all aspects of business.’

So true – you are the payroll administrator, IT director, accountant, client relationship manager, writer, event wrangler – and even the janitor (ahem, environmental compliance officer).

A CEO is a chief executive officer, the highest-ranking person in a company or other institution, ultimately responsible for making managerial decisions. So that is you – even if it’s not a role that governs a cast of thousands.

How about consulting? True again. Many solo practitioners have decades vested in diverse industries – internal and external communications, media relationships, brand management and crisis wranglers. Their experience makes them invaluable to start-ups who have big plans.

Solo, though, doesn’t mean you are alone. There are more resources now for independent practitioners than ever before – some thanks to social media, some thanks for membership groups such as PRSA – and lots of thanks for volunteers who connect the dots.

That would be true for THIS Section of PRSA – the Independent Practitioners Alliance – which is fast growing and offering more resources for busy practitioners.

Our Indy indies are also moving fast – we share jobs, RFPs, client leads and work to make it easier to connect for quick reference and help.

You are really never alone as a solo. And you don’t have to be. Just ask us. We’ll make a connection. And we’ll help get to you the next level. In this era of self-starters, join the movement. Be responsible for yourself and plant some new seeds. The time is now.

If you’d like to give more input to how we can help you fly solo, check out this section survey – open for your thoughts until the end of January.
