Tips for Gaining Experience in Public Relations After College

By Donunshae Sanders posted 08-16-2018 08:04 PM

I have been out of college for almost 2 years now and am having difficulty landing a new position due to lack of experience, new to the field, etc. I have found that most places that offer internships will not usually allow a graduate the opportunity. With being impacted by a recent restructure at my full-time job, I am on the search for a new position and unfortunately haven't been able to tie anything down. Can anyone offer any suggestions, tips or companies they know of that are looking for entry level public relations people?

Thank you in advance!

Best Regards,

Donunshae

Good evening Donunshae,

I can definitely understand your situation, as I have also graduated two years ago. Right now, I am looking for employment as a writer, content editor, or social media specialist. I was writing for a small newspaper for two years, but since the COVID situation, the newspaper has been struggling financially. I am not sure what to suggest, but my suggestion is to take advantage of the alumni services at the university you attended. If possible, they could help with resume, cover letter, LinkedIn development, and interview skills.

All the best of luck,

Hey Donunshae! I would keep your eyes peeled for post-grad internships, there are definitely several companies that only hire interns who have graduated as an experience for both parties to "test the waters." What city/region/market are you job searching in? That might help the community provide some suggestions.

P.S. Next time post this on the discussion board instead of the blog section of MyPRSA for more potential conversation :)
